Kashmir was a state of British India. In 1947 it acceded to India as the desire of an independent nation collapsed with the invasion of the valley by Pakistan backed militants. Subsequently following the failure of Pakistan to annex the valley even after two wars, the management in Pakistan made the decision to start a militant struggle against the Indian military.
